60 graduates celebrate successfully completing the Money Mentors programme

Published: 20 Feb 2015

On Friday the 20th February, 60 people graduated from the Money Mentors programme in front of their friends and families at Toynbee Hall, marking a memorable day for everyone involved in the project. The graduation ceremony followed the report launch showing the positive impact of the course.

The programme, funded by Big Lottery Fund, provides money management training to Tower Hamlets residents and increases their knowledge of finance and confidence. Part of the training also ensures that they can pass on their new skills to others in the community.

The programme is taught across the borough and groups from the Tower Hamlets Homes Group, Praxis and The Link Centre were some who graduated as well as Beyond Barriers, a partially sighted community group that are now all qualified Money Mentors.

Gary Wells, Financial inclusive Tower Hamlets co-coordinator at Toynbee Hall, hosted the event and Toynbee Hall trustee, Sarah Squires, handed out the certificates. After three months of attending regular classes, graduates collected their new OCN Entry Level 3 qualification and said a few words about their experiences.

This course has been transformational. Money Mentors have come through the programme and increased in confidence at managing their money and increased ability to save.  One of the biggest changes I have seen is that people finish the Money Mentors programme with a new optimism in their financial future. It is life changing and it has been a privilege to be a part of their journeys.”

One graduate from The Link Centre said, “This course has changed my life. I now have a full time job and have successfully been accepted to study accounting at university. It is something that I never thought would have been possible without Money Mentors.”

Another graduate from the Praxis Group commented, “In this life where money is so important and life can deal you a tough hand, Money Mentors was a lifeline to me. Together as a group we got to grips with the course, we helped each other and have learnt so much from it.”
