Be Active!, the volunteer led programme run by Toynbee Hall for children from Tower Hamlets took place from 22 – 26 June at Mile End Urban Adventure Base.

Qualified instructors and volunteers helped 290 8-10 year old children take part in the activities such as BMX, canoeing, archery, raft building, rock climbing, and arts and crafts activities in a supportive and safe environment.

The week aims to help local children in years 5 and 6, who are about to finish primary school, go through a smooth transition into secondary school, a change that can be difficult for many children.

The role of the volunteers was to encourage, value and create a safe space for the young people to express themselves, overcome new challenges and enjoy trying new things regardless of age or ability.

Watching the looks on their faces as they shot a bull’s-eye, climbed to the top of the wall, zoomed around the BMX track or won a canoe race was priceless. It was one of the most rewarding and exhilarating voluntary experiences I’ve ever had.”
