Toynbee Hall has provided a consultation response to The London Borough of Tower Hamlets plans to reduce the Council Tax Benefit support it currently provides.

The London Borough of Tower Hamlets (LBTH) is currently consulting on how to impose a contribution from those receiving Council Tax benefit. LBTH had previously chosen to provide 100% discount but due to further cost reductions required and reduced funding, are considering reducing this amount.

Toynbee Hall's position on this, as a charity seeking to eradicate poverty and support those affected by poverty, does not support the Welfare reforms that penalise the poorest in our community following austerity measures imposed by government.

We do however accept the pressures placed on local authorities by central government cuts along with the decision to localise Council Tax Support and the necessity for budget cuts this imposes on the Local Authority.
