Exhibition space

Showcasing Toynbee Hall as a powerhouse for social change.

Heritage Entrance Experience

The Heritage Visitor Experience will be divided into five zones across the Toynbee Hall Estate. Heritage visitors will be welcomed by a group of Heritage Day Volunteers who will co-curate the exhibitions to ensure that they are diverse, relevant and representative of our community.

The Heritage Entrance Experience will be open to the public for 60 hours each week. Stories on show will include an overview of 19th Century London which created the need for Toynbee Hall, the foundation of the world’s first University Settlement Movement, and a portrait of Toynbee Hall's founders. In the Heritage Spine we will demonstrate how Toynbee Hall has effected change, referencing key campaigns, from anti-sweating to child poverty.

Outdoors, across the site there are historically and socially significant areas that people can explore key stories using an App: Elijah Hoole’s design for the original building, Toynbee Hall’s WWII story, the place where Charles Booth compiled the data for his groundbreaking survey of 19th Century life in London.

Educational activities and public events

Working with local partners including Wilton’s Music Hall, Bishopsgate Institute and Tower Hamlets’ Local History Library and Archive, we will develop a series of heritage event, walks and tours.

A heritage art project will be conducted with local primary schools for children to explore the public realm and the use of Toynbee Hall as a building over the years.

We will offer training opportunities in heritage skills, public speaking, debating and campaigning to a mixed group of people recruited from Tower Hamlets College and the local community. From this group, two people will be offered a year-long paid apprenticeship to NVQ level II.
